Gordon Gooding
Shelter Island Town Councilmen
Candidate for Shelter Island Town Supervisor
Gordon has called Shelter Island home for 43 years, and for the last decade, he’s dedicated himself full-time to making it a better place. As a current Town Councilman and longtime chair of the Community Preservation Fund Advisory Board (CPF), he’s led efforts to protect our natural environment and bring greater transparency and accountability to local government. Now, he’s running for Town Supervisor to deliver the leadership Shelter Island deserves: open, responsive, respectful, and business-like. Gordon is ready to tackle the tough challenges ahead protecting our Island’s character and environment while ensuring affordable housing and thoughtful, sustainable economic growth.
I will listen to everyone. I will seek consensus on issues. We will find solutions together.
In My Own Words
Good leadership involves openness, good listening skills, receptiveness to other opinions, consensus building, willingness to compromise, and a desire to inspire positive change. And, when necessary, the ability to take a hard stance against negative impacts and initiatives.
As a Town Board member and former business owner, I see the need for strong leadership in our Town government. Our taxes continued to increase while our property assessments were neglected for three years, and suddenly hit many with dramatic changes. Our community character and environment are at risk from inflation, the construction of oversized structures, and ineffective septic systems. It’s time to make tough decisions.
